After experiencing severe weather, capacity restrictions and container shortages, American agricultural exporters are now facing a situation where pallets are not enough to carry goods.
According to data from the US agriculture and food industry, the lack of pallets has caused an estimated $1.5 billion in export losses to the U.S. agriculture and food industry, plus hundreds of millions of dollars in expenses.
Now, the United States Fresh Produce Association (UFPA) has issued an alert about pallets, warning that exports are at risk.
The intensification of pallet shortages is the result of a combination of different factors: importers and distributors have been increasing inventories, replenishing stocks at a fast rate, and companies have established buffer stocks to avoid supply interruptions. UFPA pointed out that the longer the inventory stays, the more serious this situation will be.
According to UFPA's statistics, the price of new pallets has gradually increased by 200% to 350%. The organization pointed out that in some cases, the price of pallets has risen by more than 400%. Despite this, there are still no pallets available.
