Shakhtersk port (Port Code:RUSHA) lies at the head of Zaliv Gavrilova, on the W coast of Sakhalin Island. The port consists of the outer roads lighterage area, inner harbour (ladle) and a basin protected by breakwaters for small vessels. The port is open throughout the year. From January to the middle of March, the port is usually surrounded by ice. Vessels entering/departing during this period will be escorted by ice-breakers. The principle cargo is coal, which is transferred in the roads to barges using ship's own handling gear. Max size: In fair weather vessels with a max draught of 2.5m can berth on the outer side of the N breakwater. Max depth at anchorage in the roads is 19.0m.
