      Saipan, an island of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific Ocean. The highest point, tagpochau, is 466 meters above sea level. It was ruled by Spain from 1565 to 1899. From 1899 to 1914, it belonged to Germany. Japanese occupation in 1920. It was occupied by the US Army in 1944 and became an important air force base. In 1962, it became the capital of the United States trusteeship of the Pacific Islands. At present, it mainly produces coconut, taro, cassava, dioscorea, breadfruit and banana. It also has a merchant dock and an international airport.
