Pelotas (Port Code:BRPET) is located in Rio Grande do Sul, on the left bank of the Sao Goncalo Channel, 50km from the sea. It was reported that after a gap of 11 years, ocean going vessels have again called at Pelotas, as the port has been dredged to 4.8m. The port of Pelotas in southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state is looking to double its 2001 cargo movement total of 305,000t this year and reach 1Mt in 2003, newspaper Correio do Povo reported. The extra throughput is likely to come from several local fertilizer companies and a poultry company, which plan to step up exports via the port. Meanwhile a dredging program that will allow larger vessels to use the port is due for completion in April.
