Kavieng (Port Code:PGKAV), the principal port of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea, offers a sheltered harbour protected from ocean swells although vessels on the berth,and is both a trading and tourist destination. Located on Balgai Bay at the island’s northern tip, it is a port of call for interisland and Australian shipping and handles copra, cocoa, and trochus and green snail shells (for buttons). The coral-surfaced 120-mile (193-km) East Coast Road links Kavieng with coastal plantations and villages, and the town has air facilities to other parts of the country.
