Hambantota port (port code: LKHBA), officially named Magampura port, is a medium-sized port in Sri Lanka. It is located on the south coast of Sri Lanka, about 240 kilometers south of Colombo.
The port is currently under construction, which is to facilitate the export of cement, flour, other essential goods and re-exports of vehicles and servicing ships with bunkers. It will be constructed in three stages over fifteen years. The first stage, which has been completed, includes a 610m general cargo berth and a 310m oil jetty, with a depth of 16.0 meters. The port can accommodate vessels up to 100,000DWT and handle 20,000,000TEU annually after this stage.
The second phase started in November 2010, including the basin excavation to dredge down to 17.0 meters, with a 600 meter diametre turning circle, the building of a quay wall 2,140 meters long, six berths and an oil terminal with a depth of 17.0 meters and a length of 300 meters, as well as provision of all yard handling equipment and development of a yard area of 60ha next to the quay wall.
The types of vessels regularly calling at the port are cargo vessel, accounting for 51.61%; and tanker, taking up 25.81%. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 311 meters.
