Introduction of General Santos Port (PHGSA)


      Port of General Santos City  also known as Makar terminal is the city's main international seaport and one of the best seaports in the Philippines. It is located in Barangay Labangal, not far from the Central Business District. The wharf is 740 meters (2430 feet) long and 19 meters (62 feet) wide. The wharf can accommodate up to nine ships at berthing positions for simultaneous operation. The port is equipped with modern facilities, such as container yard, storage, heavy bridge and so on. Several shipping companies operate regular inter-island ferry services to and from major ports in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Negros Navigation, SuperFerry and Sulpico provide these inter-island shipping routes, while numerous Indonesian shipping companies operate international ferry services between General Santos and surrounding ports in Indonesia to carry passengers and cargo.

Port of General Santos (port code: PHGSA / PHGES), alternatively known as Makar port, is a medium-sized port in Philippines. It is located on the north shore of Sarangani Bay, in the south of Mindanao Island, approximately 2 kilometers from General Santos City.
Incorporating the facilities required for handling the accommodation of general and bulk cargo (liquid/solid) vessels, break bulk vessels, Ro-Ro's and container ships, the port is considered to be the Philippines first modern port.
The port handles approximately 2,700,000t of cargo and 116,000TEU annually. Fruit, fruit juices, vegetables, cut flowers, copra, coconut oil, tuna fish and other marine products are among the leading exports. Livestock is also handled.
Each year about 1,420 vessels and 162,000 passengers visit the port. Around 89% of the vessels regularly calling at this port are cargo vessels. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 225 meters. The maximum draught is 11 meters. The maximum deadweight is 55,845t.
