Port of Esmeraldas is located in Ecuador on the west bank of the Esmeraldas Estuary on the northwest coast of Ecuador, on the southeast side of the Pacific Ocean, and is Ecuador's largest oil port. Ecuador’s mineral deposits are dominated by oil, with proven reserves of 150 million tons and an annual output of 10 million tons. Of which 50% is for export. Oil production value accounts for 1/4 of the total production value. The oil fields are mainly distributed in the Amazon plain in the northeast. The crude oil produced is exported directly to Hong Kong through pipelines. There is also an oil refinery in Hong Kong with an annual output of about 3 million tons. 

The port of Esmeraldas has a tropical rainforest climate with prevailing southwesterly winds. The annual average temperature is 23~25℃. The annual average rainfall is about 3000mm, and the rainy season is from December to May of the following year. 

The port of Esmeraldas includes two major parts: a large port basin and an oil port area: the shoreline of the port basin (commercial port) is 350m, which can accommodate 2 ocean-going vessels at the same time, and the maximum draft is 11.3m; the oil port area is a sea berth , It can berth ships with a length of 274m and a draft of 15.2m, and a tanker with a maximum berth of 100,000 dwt. The loading and unloading equipment includes a variety of portable cranes, mechanical vehicles, trucks, tugs and ro-ro facilities, among which the maximum lifting capacity of the portable crane is 60 tons. The warehouse yard covers an area of ​​70,000 square meters. The total length from LAGO AGRIO in the east to the port is 503km. There are pipelines connected, and the maximum transportation volume reached 42,000 tons on the first day. In addition to petroleum, the main export goods include bananas and wood. Among them, petroleum exports account for about 50% of the total value. Imported goods mainly include machinery, industrial raw materials and electrical appliances. The main trading partners are the United States, Western Europe, Japan and other Latin American countries.

Esmeraldas port (port code: ECESM) is a medium-sized general and bulk cargo port in Ecuador. Its main port is situated on the northwestern most part of the Ecuador coastline.
The port has facilities for loading and discharging operations of fuel oil, gasoline, kerosene and diesel oil. There are three berths and an oil refinery which handles several oil terminals, namely Balao Terminal, a crude oil terminal; Sea Terminal Berth X (SBM-W) for vessels up to 100,000DWT; Sea Terminal Berth Y (SBM-E), also for 100,000DWT vessels; Tepre Terminal, which has a CBM with four buoys, for oil products connected to a shore refinery/tank farm by submarine pipelines; and Petroecuador Products Terminal.
There is a free zone in the port. The principal exports from this port are bananas and timber. The main imports include pipes and steel billets. The port handles approximately 690 vessels annually, among which about 51% are tankers.
