Chiwan Port is located at the top of the Nantou Peninsula in the west of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary, and is the third largest port in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. It was built in 1982 by China Nanshan Development Co., Ltd. In addition to Shenzhen, the economic hinterland also has Huiyang, Dongguan and parts of the Pearl River Delta. The transit hinterland includes Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, northern Guangdong, eastern Guangdong, western Guangdong and both banks of the Xijiang River in Guangxi. With the rapid development of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Chiwan Port has also risen rapidly. It was opened to foreign ships in May 1984. The Chiwan-Yantian railway will be opened to traffic in 1995 and will be connected to the Beijing-Guangzhou line via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen line to connect with national railways. The highways include Guangzhou-Shenzhen, Huishen and Shenzhen-Shantou lines, and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway is expected to open to traffic in 1995. Shenzhen International Airport is about 24km away from the port . There are currently 24 berths above 500 tons in Chiwan Port, including 11 deep-water berths above 10,000 tons. Merger of Shekou Port and Chiwan Port
