Cacheu Port (Port Code: GWCAC) is a port lying along the southern bank of the Cacheu River, Cacheu port. The port serves as a Port of Entry and yachts can clear here. The port is about 15NM from the entrance. It is the site of the earliest Portuguese settlement in Guinea-Bissau and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was the centre of the slave trade. Its importance declined in the early 19th century with the decline of the western African slave trade and the rising importance of Bolama, the capital of Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) until 1942. The town provides a market for coconuts, palm oil, and rice produced in the surrounding coastal lowlands. Subsistence crops of millet, corn (maize), and sorghum are also grown in the region and some of the land is used for grazing cattle, sheep, and goats.
