Introduction of Boston Port (USBOS)

The Port of Boston (Port of Boston, MA, US) is an important seaport adjacent to the city of Boston. This is the largest port in Massachusetts and one of the main ports on the east coast of the United States.

The Boston Harbor was historically important to the development of the city of Boston. It was originally located in the urban area of the current urban area, called Long Wharf. Land reclamation and conversion to other uses means that the urban area no longer handles commercial traffic, although the Long Wharf still has a large number of ferries and recreational uses. Today's main cargo handling facilities are located in the Boston neighborhoods of Charleston, East Boston and South Boston, and in the neighboring city of Everett. Boston Harbor is also an entry point for many immigrants.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) was caused by a special act of the Massachusetts General Court in 1956. The director of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and Public Works serves as an ex officio member of the board of directors, and the remaining six members are appointed by the governor for a staggered seven years. Board members must be residents of Massachusetts. There is also a presence in the Department of Homeland Security, the US Customs Service and the US Border Patrol agent. The port has three areas of activity: cargo, cruise and ferry services.
