Ashtabula Port (port code: USASH / USASF) is a medium-sized port in Ohio, the United States. It is situated at the mouth of the Ashtabula River, on the south shore of Lake Eire, approximately 80 kilometers east of Cleveland and 28 nautical miles (43 kilometers or 27 miles) northeast of the Port of Fairport Harbor.
The port has an outer harbour of approximately 76.8 hectares and an inner harbour that is formed by the navigable portion of the Ashtabula River. The port’s Docks No. 1 and 2 are used to receive sand, potash, limestone, and quartz by self-unloading vessel. Its Dock No. 3 is used to receive sand, quartz, potash, limestone, and ore by self-unloading vessel. Dock No. 4 is used to receive foreign and domestic general cargo and to receive pig iron, lumber, and ore. There are several other docks used for different purposes.
The port handles approximately 9 million tons of cargo annually. The majority of the cargo handled is made up of coal, iron ore, sand and gravel, stone, and limestone. The types of vessels regularly calling at this port are cargo vessels, accounting for about 63.6%; and dredging vessels, taking up around 36.3%. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 305 meters. The maximum draught is 8.5 meters. The maximum deadweight is 37,421t.
