Introduction of Umm Qasr(S) (IQUQS)

Handover

Overview:

Deep water commercial port in Iraq. Located about 50 kilometers south of Basra, the second largest city in the country, on the West Bank of Zubair Bay. Ships enter the port from the East and west of bubyan island in the north of Kuwait, and there is a railway passing Zubair. Zubair Bay is a small Gulf extending from the Persian Gulf to the interior of Iraq. It is 30 kilometers deep from north to south, with a narrow mouth and wide inside. It is well concealed. Since the late 1970s, Iraq has built refineries, steel plants, fertilizer plants, etc. along the northern coast of the Gulf, and the port has also developed. In the 1980s, due to the Iran Iraq war, the access channel of Basra, the largest commercial port with 20 deep-water berths, was blocked, and the emphasis was put on the utilization and construction of Hong Kong. In January 1988, the Iraqi government invested 2.2 billion US dollars in large-scale expansion, which was undertaken by a South Korean company. As of June 1989, there were 10 berths in operation, including 2 container berths; Another 13 berths are under construction. The port construction also includes the regulation of the access channel and the addition of wharf facilities. The port capacity can reach 8 million tons, making it the largest commercial port in Iraq. Zubair industrial port in the north also has 8 berths. It is 151 nautical miles to shuweihe port, 293 nautical miles to Dammam port, 487 nautical miles to Rasheed port [Dubai], 733 nautical miles to cabs port and 2315 nautical miles to kollunpo port.
