The Port of Tulcea (port code:ROTUL/ROTCE) is one of the largest Romanian river ports. Located in the city of Tulcea on the Danube river, the port is an important source of revenue for the city because many large international companies have established there. The port serves the entire Danube delta with commercal and passenger traffic. Icebreakers are used to keep the port and Sulina Channel open in winter. Approx 1,500,000t of bulk cargo and 500,000t of other cargo are handled annually.
The shipbuilding industry is a key activity of the port and Norwegian company STX Europe (formerly Aker Yards) is the most important enterprise established there.
