Pamban port (Port Code:INPAM), administered by a conservator, is a popular fishing port. It lies close north of the west extremity of Pamban Island. Cargo is handled by lighters to and from the beach. South and southwest winds prevail from April to October.
The Pamban Lighthouse, along with 23 other lighthouses along the eastern, southern and western coast of the Indian peninsula, comes under the administration of the Chennai Lighthouse District, In accord with the Lighthouse Act of 1927 and the Lighthouse (Amendment) Act of 1985.
Pamban Pass is the navigable channel, partly artificial, through the banks which occupy the space between the west end of Pamban Island and the mainland. It is of great advantage to coastal craft trading between ports on the west coast of India and ports of the Bay of Bengal.
