Obbia (Port Code: SOOBB) is an ancient port city in Galmudug state in the north-central Mudug region of Somalia. Obbia has a seaport which serves the town. Obbia, in the central region of Mudug, is an important Somali port owing to its proximity to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which is one of the most important sea crossing points in the world, with the potential for access to international markets.
In August 2019, Qatar initiated a project to build the port of Obbia as part of the development agreements signed between Somalia and Qatar in December 2018. The future port of Obbia is of geostrategic interest because of its proximity to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is one of the most important sea crossing points in the world, with significant potential for access to international markets. Since the 13th century, Obbia has been a hub for merchants in textiles, precious metals, and pearls. The main export crops in modern times have been livestock, hides, aromatic woods, and raisins.
