Nuevitas (Port Code:CUNUE) is sheltered by a huge harbor, has two auxiliary ports, and is a major shipping point for Cuban sugar as well as other products from the surrounding agricultural region. It is one of the largest sugar exporting ports in Cuba. The entrance to the north coast Bay of Nuevitas lies between Punta Sotavento and Practicos. The port of Nuevitas consists of the town of Nuevitas and the areas of Pastelillo, Puerto Tarafa and Bufadero. The channel is narrow with sharp turns. Tankers up to 14,000DWT can use the channel without difficulty, but care must be taken because of sharp turns and the speed of currents. There are good berthage and storage facilities; lighters are also available for loading and unloading at anchorage. Imports consist mainly of general cargo; fertilisers; grain and machinery. Exports are principally sugar; citrus fruit and honey. Approximately 42 vessels visiting the port annually. Max size: Puerto Pastelillo: Length 170m; draught 9.0m. Anchorage: LOA 170m, draught 10.6m.
