Introduction of New Orleans Port (USMSY)

Overview:

      The southern commercial port of the United States. It is located in the East bend of the lower Mississippi River. It is 98 nautical miles from the southwest of the Mississippi River and 1380 nautical miles from Cologne City, Panama. It is 451 nautical miles from Houston to the west, 471 nautical miles to Tampa port in the East and 115 nautical miles to Baton Rouge in the north, and the ocean going ships can reach. The Mississippi River is 6020 km long and the drainage area is 322 square kilometers, which runs through 21 states in the central United States, and connects with the Great Lakes system. The channel of main tributaries is 2.5km. It is the main artery of domestic transportation in the United States, with an annual total transportation capacity of 500 million tons. New Orleans is the general gathering and transfer port of river assets in the Mississippi River Basin. The port area is mainly distributed on both sides of the river in the city, extending 15 nautical miles up and down, with a river channel width of more than 600 meters, water depth of more than 12 meters, and the maximum tide of 21 feet and an average of 13 feet. There are more than 140 deep-water berths along the river, more than 3/4 of them are public terminals, and more than half of them are used for cargo handling; There are 10 berths for container ro ro RO, 10 grain terminals, and a large number of special terminals for petroleum, chemical, metal and mineral. In addition, there are inner ports connecting the river with the banks of the punzatland canal and the lake area through the urban area. The annual cargo throughput of the whole port is more than 160 million tons, and it is one of the world-class major ports. The main export of grain is the largest grain export port in the world, and there are soybean, oilseeds, oil cakes, soybean oil, flour, cotton, coal, oil, lubricating oil, asphalt, chemicals, wood and its products machinery. Import sugar, syrup, banana, coffee, rubber, metal minerals, electrical equipment, automobiles, hardwood, etc. The container throughput is not much, and the annual throughput capacity is 425000 standard containers. The port has direct connection with more than 2500 ports in more than 150 countries and regions in the world. More than 4500 foreign port vessels come and exit from the port every year.

The Port of New Orleans (Port Code:USMSY) is an embarkation port for cruise passengers. It is also Louisiana’s only international container port. New Orleans is the sixth largest cruise port in the United States. In 2019, it had 1.20 million cruise passenger movements and 251 cruise vessel calls. In 1946 a foreign-trade zone was established in the port. The New Orleans FTZ has more individual warehouses and sites under its umbrella than any other U.S. port-administered FTZ. The port is located on the Mississippi River about 100 miles upriver from the Gulf of Mexico. It is a diverse general cargo port, handling containerized cargo such as plastic resins, food products, consumer merchandise; and breakbulk cargo such as steel, metals, rubber, wood, and paper.State, port, and private companies have invested nearly $1 billion in infrastructure and facilities at New orleans, and another billion of investment is planned with private partnerships.
The Port of New Orleans is the only deepwater container port in Louisiana. It has an annual capacity of 840,000 TEU, with six gantry cranes to handle 10,000 TEU vessels. Four new 100-foot gauge gantry cranes were ordered spring/summer 2019 and are under construction. There are regular container-on-barge services and on-dock rail access with the Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal. The New Orleans Public Belt Railroad provides the port, partners and shippers with an on-dock intermodal advantage.
