Marsaxlokk is located at the top of Marsaxlokk Bay on the southeast coast of Maltese. It is a transit port for container transportation in the Mediterranean region. Founded in the mid-1970s, it has developed into an important port for international routes due to its important geographical location in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and free port facilities. The climate of the port is subtropical Mediterranean, with northwest wind prevailing. The highest annual average temperature is about 37 ℃ and the lowest is about 6 ℃. The annual average rainfall is about 600 mm. The average tidal range is about 0.5m at high tide and 0.4m at low tide. The coastline of the main berths in the port area is about 1km long and the maximum water depth is 18m. Loading and unloading equipment are various shore cranes, gantry cranes and container cranes. The container terminal yard covers an area of 150000 m ∧. It can stack 2712 containers, and has super Panamax type loading bridge and special equipment for loading and unloading refrigerated containers. The oil terminal can hold 120000 DWT oil tankers, the storage capacity of petroleum products is 174000 m ∧, and the unloading capacity per hour is 2000 m ∧. The main import goods are grain, petroleum and industrial raw materials, while the main export goods are clothing, cotton textiles, shoes and groceries. In 1994, the container throughput reached 383000 TEU, an increase of 32.9% over 1993, of which transshipment accounted for 91%. In holidays, if necessary, work can be arranged, but it should be calculated according to the special rate. The development of the port in Hong Kong is supervised by the free port corporation of Malta (MFC), and container phase transshipment will remain the business center of the port in the future. The Maltese Government will give Hong Kong the largest investment in the construction of the second transshipment container terminal, which is expected to be completed in 1996. By then, the container handling capacity will reach 1 million TEU, making Hong Kong the largest hub port in the Mediterranean Sea.

Summary of MTMAR

Marsaxlokk (Port Code:MTMAR) is the major base port for 70% of the Maltese fishing fleet. It is the largest fishing port of the island’s main fishing harbour of Malta. The Port of Marsaxlokk indents the East coast of Malta between Ponta ta’ Delimara and Il- Ponta ta’ Bengħajsa, about 1 mile southwest. It is the best place to see the colourful, traditional Maltese fishing boats, the Luzzu, with the mythical eye painted on their prows.
Inhabited and well-known since antiquity, Marsaxlokk was used as a port by Phoenicians, Carthaginians and also has the remains of a Roman-era harbour. To operate and further develop Malta Freeport Terminals, the Government of Malta awarded CMA CGM a 30-year concession in October 2004. Furthermore, in February 2008 CMA CGM was granted an extension of the concession for Malta Freeport Terminals from 30 years to 65 years.
