Hakata port (port code: JPHKT) is a new port at Fukuoka City on the southwestern coast of Japan on Kyushu Island, about 54 kilometers southwest of the Port of Kita-Kyushu and 105 kilometers southwest of the Port of Nagasaki. As the western gateway to Japan, this natural harbor has long been a central point in trade with China.
Hakata port is both an ancient and a modern port. In addition to handling cargo, the port is an active fishing port and a tourism destination. Because it is convenient to Hakata Station and Fukuoka Airport, many business people stay in the port. Each year approximately 30,730 vessels, 29,700,000t of cargo including 800,000TEU and 1,750,000 passengers are handled in the port.
The year 2008 saw expansions to the container terminal of Hakata port, which added 56.2 thousand square meters of overall area and 350 meters of berth with alongside depth of 15 meters. The new facilities would add storage capacity for 784 additional TEUs.
