Port of Dar es Salaam (port code: TZDAR) is the principal port of Tanzania and other countries in the area such as Burundi, Congo (Democratic Republic) Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda and Zimbabwe. It is located on the shores of eastern Africa off the Indian Ocean, about 41 nautical miles south-southeast of the Port of Zanzibar and some 170 nautical miles south of Kenya's Port of Mombasa.
The port is a small rectangular compound bordered on the east by the river/port with rail terminals at the north and south ends. The total length of all berths, wharves and jetties is 2,080 meters, with 11 deep water berths handling containers, grain, petroleum products, general and passengers.
The port handles approximately 10 million tons of cargo annually. The principal imports include vehicles, cement, fertiliser, cotton goods, iron and steel goods, foodstuffs, machinery and oil. And the exports are primarily sisal, tea, cotton, oilseed, oil cake, timber, cashew nuts, tobacco, copper and coffee.
Each year about 1,005 vessels visit this port, among which around 62.5% are cargo vessels, and 12.5% are tankers. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 262 meters. The maximum draught is 14.7 meters. The maximum deadweight is 115,162t.
