Bremen Port (port code: DEBRE) is the second largest port in Germany and an important transit seaport in Europe. Situated 60 kilometers inland from Bremerhaven, on the River Weser, it has excellent communication links with the north European hinterland.
The port actually contains two ports: Bremen and Bremerhaven. Bremerhaven handles about 80% of the cargo, including containers. The port provides facilities for handling break bulk, dry bulk and containers. Comprehensive ship repair and warehousing facilities are also available. In addition, there is a free-port area.
The port specializes in conventional breakbulk and heavy-lift cargoes (like wood and wood products, steel and steel products, and project cargo) and bulk commodities (like coal, grain, and ores). It handles approximately 11.3 million tons of cargo and 4,450,000TEU annually.
The entrance lock to the industrial port can accommodate Panamax vessels with a maximum draught of 9.45 meters. Because of the lock, the 7 wet dock basins are tideless, which greatly reduces the time required for loading and unloading. Each year approximately 2,230 vessels visit this port, among which about 49% are sailing vessels. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 200 meters. The maximum draught is 10.6 meters. The maximum deadweight is 66,545t.
