The port is divided into 2 areas, the new main port of Bandar Shahid Rajaie, now known as Shahid Rajaee Port Special Economic Zone, and the old port of Bandar Shahid Bahonar. Bandar Shahid Rajaee is located 20 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Shahid Bahonar is 8.0 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas. The new port has breakwaters with a total length of 6,818 meters.
The port handles wet and dry commercial cargoes. It handles approximately 37 million tons of cargo and 1 million TEUs annually. The principal exports leaving this port are chrome ore, red oxide, marble blocks, cotton carpets, dried fruits, dates, almonds and pistachio nuts; the main imports entering this port are cotton piece goods, sugar, tea, matches, cereals, fertilisers, construction machinery and materials, and woollen goods.
The types of vessels regularly calling at this port are cargo vessels, accounting for about 35%; dredging vessels, taking up around 22%; and military vessels, taking a proportion of 14.5%. The maximum length of the vessels recorded to having entered this port is 300 meters. The maximum draught is 13 meters. The maximum deadweight is 99,148t.
