Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) issued a letter to customers, saying that at present, except for the impact of extreme weather, during the lockdown period, the port would ensure normal operations and provide 24 hours services at all port production units.
Shanghai, a hub for finance and international business in the country, is also home to the world's largest container-shipping port. Under the pandemic, Shanghai is still connected to the world's economic and industrial chains.
The city-wide lockdown measures include orders to work from home as well as the suspension of public transit and ride-hailing, Shanghai city announced Sunday night. Previously, only specific neighborhoods had faced temporary lockdowns with controlling pockets of outbreaks.
This includes Pudong, and forwarders said they expected factories to suspend manufacturing while transport to and from the airport and container terminals would be severely limited.
Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) issued a letter to customers, saying that at present, except for the impact of extreme weather, during the lockdown period, the port would ensure normal operations and provide 24 hours services at all port production units.
Recently, the production and operation security personnel of SIPG have been in place, staying in the temporary dormitories of all production units and entering into closed-loop management. They will guard the safety of the port against pandemics and maintain regular operations around the clock to ensure the smooth transportation of people's livelihood and pandemic prevention materials.
At present, the Port of Shanghai is running normally, and the collector truck drivers are on the road with the 48-hour negative nucleic acid test result.
Industry insiders analyze that the Port of Shanghai is not much affected after the lockdown, and the main problem that will matter is the container trucks.
However, land infrastructure and transport links to and from the country will be disrupted.
Container truck drivers must provide a negative nucleic acid test result taken in the last 48 hours and related documents during the lockdown. Many expressway entries have also been on lockdown, and the truck drivers have limited access to the city.
Although the lockdown does not close the port, the port's efficiency will be affected. The pandemic makes port workers and truck drivers unable to easily access the port, which will lead to delays in timeliness, and freight rates are expected to be adjusted upward.
