What is Ton Mile?

Ton mile is a unit of measurement used in transportation and logistics to calculate the total distance that a shipment of cargo is transported, taking into account both the weight of the cargo and the distance it travels. One ton mile is equal to the transportation of one ton of cargo over a distance of one mile. For example, if a shipment of 10 tons of cargo is transported a distance of 100 miles, the total ton miles for that shipment would be 1,000 ton miles (10 tons x 100 miles). Ton mile calculations are used in various modes of transportation, including trucking, rail, air, and sea, and are used to help calculate transportation costs and other logistics-related metrics.
