Introduction to Zaranj Airport

Zaranj Airport (IATA: ZAJ, ICAO: OAZJ) was an airport located in the city of Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz Province in southwestern Afghanistan. It played a vital role in connecting Nimroz Province with the rest of Afghanistan, facilitating travel, trade, and access to essential services. However, Zaranj Airport was replaced by the newly constructed Nimruz Airport, located 17 kilometers (11 miles) east of the city. As of 2020, Zaranj Airport is no longer listed in the Afghan Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP).

Location and Accessibility

Zaranj Airport was situated approximately 13 kilometers southeast of the city of Zaranj. The airport's location near the border with Iran enhanced its strategic importance, making it a key entry and exit point for both passengers and goods. Despite the region's challenging terrain and limited infrastructure, the airport was accessible by road, with taxis and local transport options available for travelers.

Facilities and Infrastructure

Zaranj Airport, though modest in size, was equipped with essential facilities to meet the basic needs of travelers:

Passenger Terminal: The terminal building at Zaranj Airport was designed to handle domestic flights and provided basic amenities such as check-in counters, security checkpoints, and waiting areas. The terminal was functional and aimed at ensuring a straightforward travel experience for passengers.

Runway: The airport had a single asphalt runway, which was approximately 2,000 meters long. This runway could accommodate small to medium-sized aircraft, making it suitable for regional flights. The runway's infrastructure was crucial for maintaining regular air connectivity in this remote region.

Apron and Parking: The apron provided parking positions for aircraft, ensuring efficient handling of flights. There were also basic parking facilities for vehicles, supporting the transportation needs of passengers and airport staff.
