Introduction of Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)

O'Hare International Airport (IATA Code: ORD), or O'Hare Airport, typically referred to as Chicago O'Hare International Airport, is located northwest of Chicago, Illinois.

O'Hare International Airport boasts four terminals (Terminal 1/2/3/5) and nine concourses (Concourse B/C/E/F/G/H/K/L/M). All four terminals are connected by an automated railway, making automated rides available.

According to estimates from ACI World in 2021, O'Hare International Airport ranked second among airports worldwide in terms of global aircraft movement (landings and take-offs), with 684,201 movements in total. While in 2019, Chicago O'Hare International Airport was the busiest airport in the world for aircraft movements.

Data released in Feb 2023 shows that there are about 802 non-stop flights from O'Hare International Airport to 150 domestic destinations on a daily basis. In the meantime, the international non-stop service is also available, with about 93 flights to cities beyond the US every day. O'Hare International Airport is viewed as one of the largest air cargo gateways in the US. According to the ACI (Airports Council International) dataset released in 2020, ORD Airport ranked 6th among North American airports for annual air cargo volume, with about 1.9 million tons shipped in total.

Knowing the air cargo industry is an important economic engine in the Chicago region, O'Hare Airport has been putting efforts into the modernization of its airfield since 2005. For instance, runways have been reconfigured, so heavy items can be handled in a safer way. The performance of its air cargo operations has been lifted successfully as a result.

In 2015, a cargo facility was built by DHL to boost the air cargo handling capacity, and it took the role of a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) as well, keeping up with the continued growth of air cargo tonnage handled in ORD Airport.

This airport has always been working on new facility expansion, with a project to add approximately 915,000 square feet of warehousing space completed in 2020. The capacity constraints have been relieved greatly since then. Besides, the newly-built power units and in-ground fueling have shortened the aircraft turnaround time effectively.

There is another international development plan underway. Two new satellite concourses will be added. The construction project is scheduled to begin in early 2023, with an estimated completion date in 2027-2028. It is anticipated that new concourses can accommodate both narrow and wide-body aircraft, strengthening capacity and efficiency and the same time. So its services can better match the spike in cargo volume, and moving air cargo through ORD Airport to international cargo centers has been made more efficient.

The construction work also includes replacing an outdated airport terminal (Terminal 2) with a new one (O'Hare Global Terminal). The O'Hare Global Terminal boasts a doubled space, enabling the airport's two hub carriers to integrate their cargo operations.

It is necessary to note that passengers can enjoy the fully automated riding services provided by the ATS (Airport Transit System), which connect 4 terminals in O'Hare International Airport and the Multi-Modal Facility. Be it day or night, the ride is available every 3-5 minutes.

Considerate services in the ORD Airport are here to make every passenger's trip convenient. Rides between terminal and terminal offered by the ATS, ATMs, banks, multiple airline lounges, free and paid WiFi access, charging stations, business centers, Lost and Found, postal services, spa and salon services, emergency medical services, and more, all representing care and comfort that help passengers pass through or stay at O'Hare Airport with more ease.

As for airport amenities, Chicago O'Hare International Airport has never stopped improving its airport amenities. There is an on-site hotel (Hilton O'Hare) to meet the needs of extended stays, a health club with a fitness room, a yoga room where passengers can relax, multiple mother's rooms allowing for breastfeeding, a family lounge intended to entertain both parents and kids, and airport art exhibits for viewing. Passengers have a lot more to experience at O'Hare International Airport.
